20.What causes acne in teens?
Acne in teens starts with hormonal changes, especially increase in Androgens (male hormones), during puberty in boys and girls. Androgen levels are higher in boys than girls. The increase in hormone levels causes increase oil production from the sebaceous (oil) glands in hair follicles. In acne prone individuals, this oil is more sticky than normal skin oil and leads to clumping of cells that clog the opening of hair follicles. Additionally, overgrowth of a normal skin bacteria called P. acnes, in the blocked hair follicle causes irritation and swelling leading to inflammation. When the clogged follicle bursts open, it spreads infection and inflammation to the surrounding skin.
21.Does diet affect acne?
Yes. There is no evidence that any particular type of food causes acne. BUT Acne is worsened by certain types of foods in Individuals who are predisposed to acne. According to a recent study foods rich in high glycemic carbohydrates and saturated fats increase acne severity and make it difficult to control.
22.Do dairy foods exacerbate acne?
While dairy foods do not cause acne, they tend to worsen acne due to hormonal manipulation. Cows are given hormones for milk production which leads to increased Androgen levels in milk. Androgens increase sebaceous gland activity which worsens acne and makes it difficult to control. Even organic dairy products have hormones that can increase acne severity. For severe, difficult to control acne, switch to soy milk (for girls) and rice milk for boys.
23.Is Adult Acne different from teen acne?
In some ways, yes. Although adults do not have the same type of hormonal changes as teens, the root cause of acne in adults is hormonal fluctuations as well. The type of acne lesions in adults is different from teen acne. Adults tend to have deep, cystic lesions mostly along lower face and jaw line instead of open and closed comedones commonly seen in teens.
24.Why do I get breakouts now as an adult, even though I never had acne as a teenager?
Teen acne usually starts around puberty and in most cases is resolved in early 20?s.A small percentage of teen acne sufferers continue to have acne into later years. These individuals are usually males and have severe form of acne which affects face and body. Adult onset acne, starts in late 20?s or after, usually effects females more than males and is worse around menstrual cycle. Hormonal variations due to increasing age, ovarian cysts, birth control pills, pregnancy etc lead to over activity of sebaceous glands
25.Do adults need different type of product than teens?
Yes. Acne treatment suitable for teens may not be the best options for Adult acne. Adult skin needs and the type of acne lesions are different from teens. Although the same medications that work for teens work well for adults, the formulation and dosage needs to be altered to accommodate adult skin needs and to address the deep cystic type of acne lesions more common in this age group.
26.Can I get rid of acne by washing my face many times a day?
No. Washing repeatedly will not clear up acne. In fact washing with “drying” products, such as alcohol-based cleansers or vigorous scrubbing leads to excessive irritation which can worsen acne. Cheryl’s recommend washing your skin twice a day with a quality anti-acne gentle cleanser as part of overall acne treatment regimen.
27.Does stress affect acne?
Yes. Emotional or physical Stress can have profound effect on hormonal balance which in turn affects everything else in your body. Skin is part of your body and skin health is closely related to your overall health. Chronic stress leads to cortisol imbalance which increases “inflammation”. Since acne is an inflammatory disorder, stress hormones can make acne worse and difficult to manage.
28.Does the sun help acne?
Healthy, sensible sun exposure can help acne to some extent as part of a comprehensive acne treatment program. UV rays in a VERY CONTROLLED amount have bacteriostatic effect on acne causing bacteria. Interestingly this aspect of UV light exposure is used in some of the cosmetic lasers and light based treatments to help manage acne.
The problem is that most people tend to have UNSAFE and HAZARDOUS sun exposure which negates any beneficial effect of sun rays on acne. Most acne treatments make your skin more vulnerable to sun burns by increasing your skin’s “photo-sensitivity” making it even harder to have safe sun exposure during your acne treatments.
Sensible and smart sun exposure includes wearing appropriate, broad spectrum, minimum SPF 20 sunscreen EVERY DAY, even on cloudy days and limiting outdoor activities to before 10 am or after 4 pm.
29.Can Acne be cured?
Unfortunately, No. Acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder which can be adequately managed but not eradicated. Think of acne like eczema, which can be managed with use of right skin products and avoidance of triggers.
During the course of your acne treatment, you may experience periods of excessive outbreaks interspersed with relatively clear, acne free skin.
Try to identify and manage your triggers which can vary from stress (emotional or physical), certain types of foods, environmental factors (heat, excessive sweating during sports activities). Do not lay off your skincare regimen during your acne free periods.
Most teens grow out of acne in their early to mid 20?s.Until then do not stop your acne treatment plan when you have relatively clearer skin
30.What is the best treatment for my acne?
Best acne treatment program is a comprehensive approach including lifestyle modification, skin care regimen, oral anti inflammatory supplements and medically supervised treatments as necessary based on individual skin type and response to treatment. We at Cheryl’s have observed excellent acne control in over 90% of our acne clients, with our professional acne treatments followed by the home care regimen.
31.Should I squeeze my pimples?
No. Squeezing or picking Acne lesions can lead to increase in inflammatory response and spread of infection. Both can lead to deep pitted scarring and dark pigmented scarring called Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation (PIP).
32.Can acne scars be reduced?
Yes. To some extent. The best way to manage acne scarring is to take a proactive approach by controlling acne as early as possible and with treatments that cause as little irritation as possible. Certain ingredients in acne skincare like salicylic acid can help minimize scarring and improves skin surface texture.
33.How long does it take to see visible results from my acne treatment?
Individual response to acne treatment varies. In our clinical studies, we observed improvement in skin texture, pore size, oil production and decrease in number and size of new acne lesions within 2 sittings, after starting the professional Cheryl’s ClarifiAcne Acne Clearing treatment followed with Cheryl’s ClarifiAcne Home Care Kit. A minimum of 4-6 sittings may be required for very good visible results.
34. Will using my acne products more frequently than instructed clear my acne faster?
